Artist's Description
These works are meant to reach beyond the world as I see it here in Toronto. There is a universal connection I want to communicate with my art. Drawing is another way to share the importance of our origins, the depth of our relationships, and explore how our roots have led to the world as it is now. I like to think of my sustained drawings as Wondrous Conversations.
About Mark Johnson
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I feel that cycles – beginnings, growth and relationships in the world – are important to both discover and share. I am constantly wondering where things came from, what is within them and what they will become. As a child, I would hug a tree and try to see right inside of the trunk – eyes closed, visualizing the roots and sensing the flex and sway in the wind. My art reflects this abiding curiosity, which I can pursue and share with others by drawing out connections seen with the mind’s eye. My everyday world is filtered through eyes which are marked by a condition known as Anisometropia – where one eye is nearsighted and the other farsighted. Thank you Shilpi. We are nature, or at least one of the expressions of it. I think humans bring an extra, non-physical dimension to nature that is specific to humanity, but we are all part of an interwoven whole.
